The opportunity seems obvious. I believe the bigger opportunity sits one level above the robots themselves. The major technology companies are understandably concentrating on the layers where they believe the deepest and most defensible value will accrue.

NVIDIA is building the compute, simulation, and physical AI infrastructure. Google is advancing embodied intelligence. Microsoft spans cloud, AI, and enterprise systems. Amazon has one of the world’s largest real-world robotics environments embedded within its fulfillment network. From these positions, managing robot fleets can look like a downstream application.

But a much larger problem is emerging. The future enterprise will not simply operate robots. It will operate physical work. That is a fundamentally different abstraction. Imagine a manufacturing company operating 20,000 heterogeneous machines, including humanoids, AMRs, cobots, and autonomous vehicles, alongside hundreds of human workers and remote teleoperators. The critical question will no longer be, “How efficient is Robot #1234?” It will be, “How should this task be performed, by whom or what, at what cost, with what level of autonomy, and under what safety and operational constraints?”

That requires a system that understands work rather than machines, labor economics rather than robot utilization, interventions rather than error logs, and capability rather than hardware identity. It would allocate work across heterogeneous machines and humans, bring people into the loop when autonomy falls below a threshold, predict maintenance and failures, manage software and model versions, integrate with MES/WMS/ERP systems, measure physical labor productivity, and eventually connect operations with insurance, financing, compliance, and workforce planning. The abstraction therefore moves beyond typical Robot Management to Physical Workforce Infrastructure.

That is why I don’t think the opportunity is simply another fleet-management platform for robots or humanoids. That is too narrow. The more consequential opportunity is a vendor-neutral operating layer for physical work, one that doesn’t care whether a task is performed by a humanoid robot or a human. It manages the physical work, not the machine or the human.

There is a useful historical analogy. The automobile industry did not become enormous simply because someone built a better automobile. An entire infrastructure emerged around it. The robotics industry is spending billions building the machines, while the infrastructure needed to make them useful at scale is only beginning to emerge.

If we are moving toward thousands, and eventually millions, of humanoids and autonomous machines operating across factories, warehouses, hospitals, and other environments, someone will need to manage them.
