We begin by
looking outward.
At the stars.
At the oceans.
At the movement of light.
At the beginning of time.
We name what we see.
We measure.
We seek the first cause.
And slowly,
almost without noticing,
the one who is looking
disappears behind
the act of looking.
Until one day
the question changes.
Not, what is the universe?
But, who is asking?
A tree is a tree
because it is not the sky.
A wave is a wave
because it is not the shore.
We begin with distinction.
This, not that.
Here, not there.
From distinction
comes identity.
From identity
comes relation.
From relation
comes structure.
And from structure,
a world.
There was no beginning
in the way we imagine one.
The beginning
was not an event,
but a distinction.
The first difference.
The first possibility
of one thing being
other than another.
And from difference,
form.
From form, relation.
From relation, structure.
From structure, a universe.
And somewhere
within that universe,
a question.
The universe made stars
before it made eyes.
It made light
before anything could see it.
It made worlds
before anything could
call them home.
It made life
before life could ask
what life was.
And then,
the universe
looked back at itself.
Not through a telescope.
Not through an equation.
Through us.
Through me.
Through every mind
that has ever looked
into the night
and wondered.
We imagine consciousness
as something that exists
inside the universe.
Perhaps that is true.
Consciousness is a mirror
through which reality
becomes capable
of seeing itself.
Not outside reality.
Not separate from it.
The observer
and the observed
were never two.
They were two descriptions
of one unfolding.
And yet,
there remains something
we cannot follow.
Something that does not move.
Something before
here and there,
before and after.
We call it mystery.
That is enough.
There is a moment
when searching changes.
We are no longer
looking for an answer.
We are looking differently.
The stars have not changed.
The ocean has not changed.
The world has not changed.
We have.
And suddenly,
what seemed distant
becomes intimate.
What seemed separate
becomes connected.
What seemed outside
is understood
to be within.
The question
and the questioner
begin to disappear
into one another.
This is why
the deepest journeys
do not take us somewhere else.
They bring us back.
To the beginning.
To the ordinary.
To the breath
we had forgotten
we were taking.
The journey outward
was never separate
from the journey inward.
The universe
was never merely
something outside us.
It was the ground
from which the observer arose.
And then,
for a moment,
the distinction falls away.
There is no universe
and observer.
No question
and questioner.
No search
and destination.
Only reality,
recognizing itself.
Consciousness
is not the end
of the journey.
It is the moment
the journey becomes aware
that it is a journey.
Recognition
is not the answer.
It is the beginning again.
Because the moment
we see ourselves
as part of what we seek,
a new distinction appears.
A new question.
A new possibility.
